Salford Schwenkfelder Meetinghouse
Lower Salford and Franconia Townships, Montgomery County
A rich history of pioneering Schwenkfelders is encompassed in this imposing 1869 Federal-style meeting house and adjoining cemetery in Harleysville. As the older Schwenkfelders in the vicinity passed on, and their children began to marry outside of the denomination, the attendance at this historic meeting house dwindled so much that services were finally conducted only once in three weeks during summer. These regular services were completely discontinued in 1920 upon the death of Isaac Kriebel, the adjacent farmer who maintained the property and who was the last active Schwenkfelder in the congregation. Today, annual Memorial Services in memory of the Schwenkfelders who lie buried in the adjoining cemetery are now held in the meeting house on the afternoon of the first Sunday in June. Come step back in time and celebrate the lives of these pioneers.
