Amphibians and Wetlands

  1. Amphibians–Amazing Transformers: This video topic focuses on salamanders and frogs…we think you’re toad-ally going to like it, and we’re not am-FIB-ian! Heritage Conservancy supports these species by protecting their habitats and by supporting safe passage of salamanders across busy roads each year through our Quakertown Swamp Amphibian Rescue Partnership. Watch the video to learn what makes amphibians so important to ecosystems, and then partake in the game and activities below to have fun with what you’ve learned!
  2. Skunk Cabbage: We made a video about skunk cabbage, and it stinks! The skunk cabbage, that is. Watch this video to learn all about the unique properties of skunk cabbage, including its strong odor, and see why it is important to wetland ecosystems. Skunk cabbage can be found at Heritage Conservancy’s Hart’s Woods Preserve in Doylestown, and kids love to visit the cabbage patch on site. After you watch the video, take the Rhyming Quiz (Activity) to test how much you’ve learned!
  3. “The Secret Pool” Storytime: This is a story about vernal pools and the amphibians that go searching for them in springtime. This book comes to you from the “Our Watershed Is an Open Book” Program by our Alliance for Watershed Education of the Delaware River partners at Fairmount Water Works. Have the kids watch along and learn, and then follow it up with the activity below.
